Gender As A Primary Cultural Frame - 1517 Words
As human beings, we rely on categories of differences to make sense of the world around us. We utilize our shared cultural knowledge to categorize ourselves as the self and those around as other in order to coordinate our actions. One of the most common example of such categories of differences is gender. For that very reason, Cecelia L. Ridgewood (2009) defines gender as a primary cultural frame. It not only shapes our interactions and but also how we organize social institutions, ââ¬Å"Thus, difference and inequality codetermine each other in our shared gender beliefs, and coordination on the basis of them produces social relations of inequality as well as differenceâ⬠(Ridgeway 2009:149). These shared gender beliefs are socially constructedâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦I m still confident as a boy and I will always be a boyâ⬠(Figure 1). As noted by C.J. Pascoe (2007), one of the ways through which boys escaped from the ââ¬Å"fag discourseâ⬠was by not caring abo ut appearance. Here we can see Charles deflecting this discourse by affirming his gender identity as a male solemnly because his of interest in makeup which is usually an interest reserved for women and other men who are gay. However, as also noted by Pascoe, this discourse is inescapable as it is used as a policing mechanism to hold boys accountable for their performance of their assigned gender identities. This example was seen in the comment section where a male commenter posted a meme with caption, ââ¬Å"You a fucking faggot niggaâ⬠(Figure 2). Despite Charles distancing himself from other transgender male artists and affirming his male identity, he was still unable to escape the ââ¬Å"fag discourseâ⬠as he failed to align himself with the hegemonic ideals of masculinity. Thus, as concluded by Pascoe ââ¬Å"becoming a fag has much to do with failing at the masculine tasks of competence, heterosexual prowess, and strength or in any way revealing weakness or femininity as it does with as it does with sexual identityâ⬠(2007:54). How Does Inflation Affect the Function of Money free essay sample
Explain how inflation affects the functions of money. Inflation is the general increase in the price level over a period of time. Money is something that is generally acceptable in the exchange of goods and services. When inflation occurs, the value of money decreases as the same amount of money cant buy the same amount of products like before. The purchasing power of money decreases. If the inflation rate is high and unanticipated, lots of problems can occur. People can lose confidence in money as it can not continue to keep its value. People will not save their money to invest further. Money loses its store of value function. People will tend to keep real assets like lands to retain their wealth. Money can not serve as a medium of exchange, too because people rather use solid products like clothes or Jeans to exchange for goods than the worthless money. Money continues to serve as a effective medium of exchange as it circulates around the economy. The unit of account function of money wont be affected as the prices of goods still represent the value of goods. Firms can benefit from low real interest rates sometimes because of inflation and are encouraged to invest and borrow from banks. Banks are willing to lend because they can add interest rates according to current inflation rate. Money is still standard for deferred payments. However, moneys store of value function might be affected as moneys value will fall due to inflation. Yet as long as the inflation rate is stable and xpected, people can plan in advance or save money in banks for interest rates to avoid any undesired effects. Yet if the inflation rate is low and stable, money can function better. Peoples wage increase can keep up with the inflation rate; though prices are generally higher, consumers can still make purchasing decisions and more output to satisfy consumer demands. Money will flow smoothly in the exchange of goods at the same time Also, steadily increasing prices show that the value of products might be increasing as well because money as a unit of account
