Human beings are social creatures and thrive on communicating with one another. We typically communicate to meet personal needs; learn about ourselves, other people, and the world; and to build and maintain relationships with others (Bevan Sole). Effective communication can be measured by the ability to transfer a message from a sender to receiver and successfully have it decoded as intended. Interpersonal communications include many factors, elements and strategies. This paper will address five learning outcomes and demonstrate how these ideas can be utilized to help people increase their communication competence and improve personal and professional relationships in the work place. Principles of and barriers to effective interpersonal communications Successful interpersonal communications are achieved thru communication competence. There are many advantageous functions of interpersonal communication but with those enablers comes a number of challenges that will require conceptual understanding, intentional effort, and practice to overcome. These barriers increase the number of communications that will be misperceived and improperly decoded. Ultimately, leading to the inability to be able to share meaning with one another.
